This is the biggest game so far in the 2022 GHSA season between two in-state rivals who are both nationally ranked. The Wolves are No. 7 in this week's USA Today Super 25 and the Hawks are No. 7. 21.
Ufc 278: Jorge Masvidal Hints At Immediate Title Shot Against Leon Edwards
This game is bigger than what is clear as the winner becomes the overwhelming favorite to win the district title and earn the top seed in the state tournament. This is also the first time the two Gwinnett County franchises have played, even though the schools are 10 miles apart.
Mill Creek is looking for its first win against a Class 1 team that is 0-5 all-time. In fact, the last two seasons, the Hawks have played #1 in their region beating Grayson in 2020 and Collins Hill in 2021. But things are a little different this year. The Hawks may have their best team ever, even better than the 2015 and 2016 squads that both finished 13-1 with their only losses coming in the state semifinals.
Even coach Josh Lovelady admitted this is probably the biggest regular-season game in the Hawks' 19-year history, and that's a rare admission for any coach midway through the season.
Buford is said to have sold more tickets to this game than anyone who has owned a stationary bike in history. Why is there so much excitement about the regular season for a Wolves program with 14 state championships, including three straight, and 21 state finalists, including 18 of the last 21 years? The big game is common place for the Green and Gold.

A lot has to do with the proximity of the two schools and the fact that players from both sides grew up playing against each other in the Gwinnett Football League. And then there is the matter of self-expression.
Buford's team appears to be the second best program in state history and the last 20 years have been the best. But the Wolves are playing in the state's biggest division for the first time, and surprisingly, they're still proving they can win it all at the GHSA's highest level.
Coach Bryant Appling, who is 47-3 in his fourth season as head coach and 20 seasons with the program, said the game felt like the 2020 state semifinal against Valdosta. The Wildcats are the only team with more state crowns than Buford. In case you forgot the game you saw, the Wolves beat Valdosta 45-26 that December night.
Here in 2022, Buford is riding a 17-game winning streak in this exhibition. Four of their six wins came against top-10 teams, except for a 21-14 win over then-No. 8 North Cobb, the Wolves are winning by an average of 28 points per game.

Mill Creek has won nine of its last 10 games, with its only loss coming in the 2021 state final against Milton in the last quarter. Three of their six wins this year have come against top-10 teams and the Hawks have won their last five games by an average of 31 points since the final 15 seconds of a 47-41 win over the Yes. 9 The Walton and Corky Kell Classic opens the season at the Mercedes-Benz Games.
